What is it?
MuscleAid is a specialist formulation that reduces the incidence of exercise induced muscle damage and soreness and to accelerate recovery.
Many horses suffer with muscle problems, either as a result of dietary sensitivities, genetic predisposition, anatomical asymmetries, sub-optimal conformation or simply the demands of training and competition.
Muscular pain can lead to significant days lost from training and reduced performance. It has been recognised that for horses at higher risk of muscle problems, providing dietary support is an essential part of long-term management.
What’s in it?
Natural antioxidants (Vitamin E and Selenium) support muscle cell integrity and reduce free radical damage.
Astaxanthin is a potent anti-oxidant which is found in yeast, algae, and wild salmon (it gives salmon it’s pink colour). Astaxanthin has been studied in horses in combination with L-Carnitine. This combination was fed to horses in training. The result was reduced muscle damage. Astaxanthin should be fed at a minimum dose of 37.5mg in combination with L-Carnitine to prevent muscle damage to horses in training.
L-Carnitine is a naturally occurring derivative of the amino acid Lysine. L-Carnitine is involved in energy and metabolism. The combination of L-Carnitine and Astaxanthin have been shown to reduce muscle damage which results from athletic training in horses. L-Carnitine should be fed at a minimum serving of 1.5g daily for a 500kg horse when used in combination with Astaxanthin to reduce muscle damage, or to improve the muscle’s response to training a serving of 10g per day can be used.
HMB (hydroxy methyl butyrate) A metabolite of the essential amino acid Leucine.
HMB has been studied in horses and has been found to result in decreased blood creatine kinase and lactic acid after exercise. These findings support the idea that HMB helps to reduce exercise induced muscle damage in horses.
So why don't we use other amino acids?
All the latest research points to these three key components (Leucine, Lysine and HMB) when it comes to building, supporting and developing muscle and to aid recovery. The level at which we include these components ensures your horse get the optimal amount required as suggested in scientific papers. When you compare many of the other brands, you will see they only supply as much amino acids as you would usually get feeding hard feed or hay.
Q: How long before I should start to see any changes?
A: Our research studies indicate results within 2-4 weeks of feeding for horses in work.
Q: Do I need to give this with feed?
A: You should mix with feed, ideally twice a day, and follow the feeding instructions on the above tab.
Q: Is it safe to give to competition horses?
A: Yes, there are no prohibited substances in this product and all our products are manufactured and tested under our UFAS licence and NOPS scheme.
Q: How much should I give?
A: Please see our detailed feeding guide on the above tab.
Ingredients & Feeding Guide
Level 25ml (11.9g) scoops per day
For daily support
- Pony - approximately 250kg | 2 Scoops
- Horse - approximately 500kg | 3 Scoops
- Large Horse - over 750kg | 4 Scoops
The daily feeding rate can be doubled before and after hard training or competition. Ideally feed 60min prior to exercise or competition in a small feed (e.g. chaff). The feeding rate can also be doubled after an episode of muscle soreness.
Mix thoroughly with feed and split between meals where possible. Can be fed with wet or dry feeds.
Do not exceed the recommended intake.
One of our core values is transparency. That’s why we list all the active ingredients per daily feeding rate so you know exactly what your horse is getting.
Feeding SafeSalt or Complete Electrolytes with MuscleAid to ensure there is no electrolyte deficiency or imbalance is strongly recommended. Natural E can be fed with MuscleAid to further increase Vitamin E intake up to 8000IU per day.
